Lapras - Garden and Hérold Castle

The castle of Lapras or "Hérold House" is a large square house, located on high terraces, with side mountain, a large park.
It is Ferdinand Hérold, lawyer at the supreme court of appeal (he will be a prefect of the Seine later), which is established in Ardeche for electoral reasons and buys the house of Lapras in the medium of the 19eme century. |

Ferdinand Hérold has a son, André Ferdinand Hérold (1865- 1940) who is strong and attaching personality of the literary and artistic world. Poet and dramatic author, André Ferdinand is one of the last representatives of the school Symbolist. He was also critical dramatic with the "Mercury of France" whose he will take the presidency a long time.
André Ferdinand will hold also all his life to defend his republican and humane ideas liberally and thus accomodated in his house of Lapras: Paul Valéry, Pierre Louÿs, the scientist Jean Perrin, Andre Gide, Stuart Merill, but also Maurice Ravel, the winter 1919/1920 which wrote its famous waltz there, and so much of other personalities which made House Hérold, a high place of creation and cultural user-friendliness.
